This Place is a SHAMBLES!!

Well, not quite. You’ll see what I mean…

York still remains one of my favourite places in the UK to visit.

It really does have absolutely everything for everyone.

We only had a short weekend here but it was exactly what we needed, night-life, beautiful buildings and good shops. I feel like every time I visit I come away having found something else I would like to do next time.

As mentioned in my previous post, we decided to have a city break in the Van (The Yellow One) this weekend, with a chosen destination of York. The previous post details how we struggled to find a space to park using Google maps. Now I’m going to tell you what we actually managed to do.

When we arrived, we drove to the couple of potential camp spots I did manage to find, however none of them were really suitable. Whilst driving around, we arrived at Marygate Carpark, about a 5 min walk from York Minster. It was £2 to park over night between the hours of 8pm and 8am. Perfect! We parked in the corner out of the way and didn’t use our silver screens to avoid us looking so obvious. Luckily it was a pretty warm weekend, especially compared to some of the ones we’ve had in Scotland so they really weren’t necessary. We headed out that evening for food and drinks, calling at various pit stops and watering holes along the way.

In the morning, we woke up at 8am and paid our £2 parking fee. We then decided that for the time it would take to drive around finding a new spot we may as well just pay £12.50 and park all day and all night, totalling £14.5 for 2 nights, which even though we would obviously prefer to be free, we would have probably only spent on Taxi’s getting to and from the City Centre. The car park is 24 hour with CCTV so you know that it is safe and secure. Not the best place if you’re wanting to BBQ and have fires, but as mentioned we were having a city break.

On Saturday, we had a look around the shops and went to meet a friend for a drink. We ate at a lovely restaurant on the river front called Winner Winner. Winner Winner specialise in chicken (Winner Winner Chicken Dinner) and burgers. Very American style food, but incredibly tasty. We created a tapas style lunch by selecting 3 of the starters. Chicken Strippers, Pizza Bites and Little Boy Chilli Nachos. This was just enough for 2 of us and as mentioned, delicious. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting York.

In the Afternoon we took a walk around the Shambles. The Shambles are the remains of an old street, some of the buildings there date back as far as the 14th century. The old towering buildings overhang above you, but each one is now occupied by a unique shop. We stopped at a small Yorkshire ale shop so that Tom could get a bottle (For Christmas my mum got him a VW wooden logo where you can place bottle tops in to fill it) so now wherever we go we try to look for a unique bottle top for him. Whilst meandering through the shambles, we came across ‘The York Roast Co’ now if you haven’t heard of the phenomenon that was the Yorkshire Pudding Wrap then you really have lived under a rock for the past 3-4 months! Review coming up in my next post!

When exiting the shambles and coming to the York Minster, the sky had turned into a canopy of pink and purple camouflage, it is by far one of the nicest sunset skies I have ever seen!

We spent Sunday morning in the National Railway Museum. The Museum is free to enter with a requested donation of £5. We were really lucky as Tim Peake’s spacecraft is currently homed there in the centre of the large turntable. The museum dates back through hundreds of years of rail history and has literally 1000’s and 1000’s of railway memorabilia to keep you entertained.

All in all, we had a fantastic weekend in York, but there are still so many places I would like to see, Including

Jorvic Viking Centre – Museum and visitor attraction in York depicting Viking life in the City (

Walk the walls – York is a walled city, you can still walk around the walls to get some views of the city itself

York Dungeons – Depicts the history of the Dungeon using special effect and actors (
